Week of Aug. 31st, 2015



Story of the Week: The Storm
Genre: Realistic Fiction
High Frequency words (vocabulary):                                             for, what, have, he, look, too
Word Family short ‘i’ words:                 
if, is, him, rip, fit, pin

Students will be reading and learning about re-telling a story this week. We will have a HFW Test Thursday. A spelling, and reading test on Friday

Grammar: Nouns-A person, place or thing      
Writing: Captions   
Handwriting: Letter formation of Dd, Ee, Ff and Gg

Homework Policy and Routine:
Homework will be given Monday through Thursday. Your child will be doing spelling and writing homework in their “Homework Notebook.” I check homework every morning. Math Homework will be sent home after the completion of each lesson and should be returned the following day.
Homework This Week:
Monday: Word Code: Write your Words. Trace Consonants in blue, Vowel in red.                                    
Tuesday: Write 5 sentences using the Word Family Words (if, is, him, rip, fit, pin).                    
Wednesday: Write 5 sentences using the High Frequency Words.(for, what, have, he, look, too)              
Thursday: Write ALL the words 3 times (x) each
Chapter 1 Math Test will be on Tuesday Sept. 8th
              Daily 5 Update                     
 Wow! We’ve finished the 10th day of school and we already are Stamina Stars!!  The class is moving towards independence in Read to Self (12 minutes), Work on Writing (10 minutes)! Word Work, Listening to reading (on the computer) and Read to Someone will be launched in the coming weeks.
Social Studies:  Over the next 2 weeks, we will be learning and writing about School Leaders: Principal, Teachers,  Media Specialist, and more.

Week of August 24, 2015



Story of the Week: What is a Pal?     
Focus Skill: Main Idea and Summarize                             
 Word Family: Short ‘a’ Words               am, at, sat, man, dad, mat
High Frequency Words:(sight words)   and, be, help, you, play, with            
 Children will need to be able to spell and read these words by the end of the week. We will have a spelling test and reading test at the end of each week.
Grammar: Nouns—A person, place or thing                              Writing: Labels and Ideas;  
Handwriting: Letter formation of Aa, Bb, Cc and Dd

Homework: Homework is checked daily. Students will do spelling in their Homework Notebook
Monday: Write your H.F. words. Trace the vowels in red and consonants in blue.                     
Tuesday: Write 5 sentences using the Word Family Words.                           am, at, sat, man, dad, mat           
Wednesday: Write 5 sentences using the High Frequency Words.                           and, be, help, you, play, with         
Thursday: Write the words 3 times (x) each
Math will come home at the end of each lesson.
 Some snapshots of work we did the 1st week of school
We read Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes and talked about being kind to others. We then made a Chrysanthemum craft, wrote her name and the vocabulary words used to describe her in the story.
 
We wrote about our first week in first grade.
This example made me smile!
